Retention of Earth Sciences building structure for new Life Sciences lab building

The structure of the current Earth Sciences building will be given a new lease on life, as part of the laboratory building that is planned to be built on its location. During the demolition work, the building’s concrete frame proved to be in much better condition than expected. The university has far-reaching ambitions when it comes to the sustainable use of materials, so the preference is to retain the current building structure and integrate it into the new lab building to be developed by an external market party.

New developments

The former Earth Sciences building will create space for new developments at Utrecht Science Park. Utrecht University aims to offer a ground lease contract to an external developer for the construction of a Life Sciences lab building.  The university will then lease the building while the Hugo R. Kruyt building is undergoing renovations.

The Earth Sciences Remediation and Demolition project will be conducted in such a way that the building lot and structure can be handed over to the external developer. The contractor Dusseldorp is still hard at work on this stage of the project. Once it is complete, the lot and structure will be secured behind barriers until construction can begin.
