Message from the board

Dear reader,

With the Summer behind us, we can look back at a successful Summer School. The online format provided new possibilities for students to attend who would normally not be able to travel to the Netherlands. Next year we will organise a hybrid format for the Summer School to combine best of both worlds. Most meetings held at the Centre are now available as hybrid events, such as the recent lunch meeting Introduction to Evolution Systems: A Biological Perspective. But the Centre has also recently organised a fully on-campus event for the Complexity of Sustainability Fund. A new workshop in this series is in the making. We hope to meet you there or at one of our other events!

The board of the CCSS

Meet PhD Candidate Silja Zimmermann

Silja Zimmermann started as a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS) in February this year. She works under supervision of Ine Dorresteijn, Bert Theunissen, Brian Dermody and Martin Wassen on leveraging a sustainable transition of the food system for indigenous communities in the Bering Sea. She briefly introduces herself.

Visiting Professorship Call 2022

In 2022, we will be reopening the Visiting Professorship at the Centre for Complex Systems Studies. The aim is to strengthen international cooperation and complexity research and to increase the international visibility of the CCSS. A maximum of € 10,000 is available per application. All members of the CCSS are cordially invited to submit a proposal before the deadline of 11 December.

Improved El Niño prediction

The Centre for Complex Systems Studies has improved the models used on the website elninoprediction.nl. A machine learning-based prediction system has been developed for this purpose, which not only predicts the main index of El Niño, the Ocean Nino Index, but also its uncertainty for lead times up to nine months. These long-term predictions are important for taking adequate measures (e.g. by farmers) to mitigate the effects of El Niño.

Master's profile Complex Systems

The CCSS offers education to Master’s students in the Master’s profile Complex Systems. CCSS members and research partners provide a broad range of interdisciplinary research projects on complex societal challenges. We are always open to new research projects, so please contact the CCSS coordinator Qingyi Feng if you have a complexity research idea for our Master’s students.

Nobel Prize for complexity research

This year the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi for ground-breaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems. The CCSS is proud to see the importance of complexity research underlined by a Noble Prize awarded to this topic. We kindly invite you to a lunch meeting devoted to this Noble Prize research on November 4 2021.

New travel fund call for PhD candidates

Are you a PhD candidate at Utrecht University or outside the Netherlands who is currently working on complexity research? Would you like to visit a foreign research institute or the Centre for Complex Systems Studies to further develop your research skills? The Swaantje Mondt Fund offers an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and develop new research skills on complexity.
Apply before 13 December 2021.
