The bloom arch can (not) always be tense! In the Netherlands, about 55% of solitary bee and bumblebee species are in trouble, in danger of disappearing. Solitary bees, bumblebees and honeybees depend on a large species diversity in the plant world. Solitary bees often only fly on one or two types of flowers for food. Those flowers must be within their 150- 500 m radius of action. Solitary bees do not stockpile, therefore the presence of food in their short life of 3-5 weeks is essential. The presence of honey bee colonies can coexist well with that of solitary bees because they have different preferences for their food sources. At high temperatures, honey bees fly up to about 3 km around their nests, but at low temperatures they fly no further than about 500 meters from their nests. Moreover, from early spring through fall, honey bees need to be able to get at least 5 different types of pollen to be healthy and build up a honey supply to get through the winter well. The Botanic Gardens are home to about 10,000 species of plants. Almost all of those plant species can flower, and many of them rely on insects for pollination. The Insect Meadow is home to a number of honey bee colonies, allowing us to show visitors how these socially-operating insects live, breathe and work. The hives are managed by our expert and enthusiastic bee volunteer Trees van den Hoogen. She emphasis on natural beekeeping, where the hives are disturbed as little as possible. Honey, for example, is now only harvested on rare occasions. Nature-inclusive beekeeping allows many different bees to gather food in the Botanic Gardens. The basis for this is a well-balanced “bloom arch,” allowing bees to collect sufficient pollen and nectar from January through September. Trees therefore advises, “Make sure you have as much diversity of plants in your garden as possible. In doing so, you help the bees tremendously, because you create a good source of nectar for the bees. Half of solitary bees are endangered, so let's help them, for example by providing an insect hotel. About 10% of all solitary bees breed in them, 70% breed underground.” #biodiversity #bees #insects #natuurinclusief Bijenstichting (Dutch Bee Conservation) https://lnkd.in/eGWdqsmg

Look at that! A group of students and PhD candidates from the UUPlants research cluster were eager to share their enthusiasm for plants and plant research with a younger audience. That is why they took the initiative of developing an activity for this year’s Plant Fascination Day (18 May), for which they have put together colourful, illustrated posters featuring some fun assignments for children aged 6 to 12. The information on the posters focuses on the resilience of plants under harsh conditions, such as drought or flooding, and highlights cutting-edge plant research done at Universiteit Utrecht on highly relevant topics such as climate change and food safety. Curious? You can check out the posters at the Botanical Gardens this Saturday. Julia Mars, Mariana Vega Blanes, Rianne Kluck, Alysha Somer #uuscience #plants #plantfascinationday #resilience

More than 25 researchers from ten different European countries will join Utrecht’s first #Screenathon, taking place from May 14th to May 17th. At several beautiful, historical sites in Utrecht's city centre, the researchers together will screen more than 10,000 publications to get insights into research activities from all over the world relevant to the IMPROVE project. This project seeks to improve how healthcare utilizes patient-generated health data. During the Screenathon, researchers will train the AI-models to identify relevant publications. For this, they need to screen as many publications as possible to give feedback to the software. “Typically the screening is an individual effort sitting behind your laptop for weeks”, says Professor Rens van de Schoot, organizer of the event. “We developed the concept of the Screenathon to increase the motivation of screening many thousands of papers.” AI Labs (Utrecht University) Read more on IMPROVE and this Screenathon: https://lnkd.in/egkCgCQi #UUScience #IMPROVE #AI #Healthcare

Would it be possible to build a refinery that is completely #fossil-free, and thereby significantly contributing to a carbon-neutral society by as early as 2050? According to two chemists from Utrecht University it is. In a highly visionary Nature article, they present a roadmap in which oil refineries could be reinvented to be completely fossil-free. Processes will be electrified if possible, and raw materials will change to CO2, agricultural and municipal waste. “We wanted to see what would be needed to make a fossil-free refinery and took that to the extreme.” Publishing in the journal Nature - accompanied by an editorial article as well as being featured on the journal cover - Utrecht University researchers Eelco Vogt and Bert Weckhuysen introduce a refinery that is completely carbon-neutral. They use order-of-magnitude calculations for a single refinery plant that they assume to be in Europe, thereby showing what it takes in terms of energy, materials, and resources, as well as the related financial and political constrains. Alas, our nominee Sabine Corazon Oudt was not selected as UU Alumnus of the Year. But the good news is that her fellow teacher (geography) Tim Schuring was! We believe this sign of appreciation for teachers' work to be particularly important in these times of teaching staff shortage in secondary education. We interviewed Sabine earlier and that conversation was too much fun not to share. (Green) inspiration guaranteed! 💚 🌱 #UUScience #mathematics #sustainability #education https://lnkd.in/esVvXTRi
Yay, the UU Alumnus of the Year is a teacher!

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) all have a unique and diverse set of antibodies that are involved in the development of the disease. Researchers at Utrecht University unveiled the complexity of these antibodies using powerful lab tools capable of analysing our immune system at molecular levels. Their discovery suggests that current assumptions about the origin of RA are too simple. Still, their findings may point towards improved diagnostics. Normally, our body’s immune system is equipped with a ‘filter’ that cleans up these autoantibodies. Researchers believe that this mechanism is malfunctioning in #RA patients. The extend to which this filter is malfunctioning, now appears to be much greater than expected. Research by Albert Bondt and colleagues from Utrecht University and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), published in #Nature Communications, reveals that it’s not just a handful of different RA-associated autoantibodies that evade the filter. On the contrary, the researchers found an extremely broad variety of these antibodies. Their findings challenge previous assumptions about the backgrounds of RA, that overlooked the antibodies’ diversity and complexity. “This shows that RA is not just a disease occurring due to small errors, but a big structural problem in the immune system”, says Bondt. https://lnkd.in/g8ysgDiA #UUScience #Pharmaceuticalsciences #BiomolecularMassSpectrometryandProteomics #hecklab
