More than 25 researchers from ten different European countries will join Utrecht’s first #Screenathon, taking place from May 14th to May 17th. At several beautiful, historical sites in Utrecht's city centre, the researchers together will screen more than 10,000 publications to get insights into research activities from all over the world relevant to the IMPROVE project. This project seeks to improve how healthcare utilizes patient-generated health data. During the Screenathon, researchers will train the AI-models to identify relevant publications. Would it be possible to build a refinery that is completely #fossil-free, and thereby significantly contributing to a carbon-neutral society by as early as 2050? According to two chemists from Utrecht University it is. In a highly visionary Nature article, they present a roadmap in which oil refineries could be reinvented to be completely fossil-free. Processes will be electrified if possible, and raw materials will change to CO2, agricultural and municipal waste. “We wanted to see what would be needed to make a fossil-free refinery and took that to the extreme.” Publishing in the journal Nature - accompanied by an editorial article as well as being featured on the journal cover - Utrecht University researchers Eelco Vogt and Bert Weckhuysen introduce a refinery that is completely carbon-neutral. They use order-of-magnitude calculations for a single refinery plant that they assume to be in Europe, thereby showing what it takes in terms of energy, materials, and resources, as well as the related financial and political constrains. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) all have a unique and diverse set of antibodies that are involved in the development of the disease. Researchers at Utrecht University unveiled the complexity of these antibodies using powerful lab tools capable of analysing our immune system at molecular levels. Their discovery suggests that current assumptions about the origin of RA are too simple. Still, their findings may point towards improved diagnostics. Normally, our body’s immune system is equipped with a ‘filter’ that cleans up these autoantibodies. Researchers believe that this mechanism is malfunctioning in #RA patients. The extend to which this filter is malfunctioning, now appears to be much greater than expected. Research by Albert Bondt and colleagues from Utrecht University and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), published in #Nature Communications, reveals that it’s not just a handful of different RA-associated autoantibodies that evade the filter. On the contrary, the researchers found an extremely broad variety of these antibodies. Automated medical reporting with speech recognition and AI language models eases administrative burden of healthcare professionals In the Netherlands, healthcare premiums have surged once more this year, with projections indicating a continuing upward trend. A viable approach to maintaining healthcare affordability involves alleviating the administrative burdens placed on healthcare professionals. With this objective in mind, a team comprising three former students alongside Professor Sjaak Brinkkemper initiated startup Verticai which specializes in pioneering software solutions designed to significantly reduce the administrative responsibilities confronting healthcare providers. Water can be purified using mushroom substrate: the mixture of fungal filaments and horse manure that remains after harvesting mushrooms. The substrate effectively decreases concentrations of pesticides and drugs in contaminated water. Utrecht University researchers Brigit Van Brenk, Han Wösten, and colleagues demonstrate this in a paper in the scientific journal Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. The results show the potential of the substrate as a promising alternative to current water purification methods. Theoretical physicists at Utrecht University, together with experimental physicists at Sogang University in South Korea, have succeeded in building an artificial synapse. This synapse works with water and salt and provides the first evidence that a system using the same medium as our brains can process complex information. The results appeared today in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Tim Kamsma, a PhD candidate at the Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University, and the lead author of the study, expresses his excitement, stating, "While artificial synapses capable of processing complex information already exist based on solid materials, we now show for the first time that this feat can also be accomplished using water and salt." He emphasizes, "We are effectively replicating neuronal behaviour using a system that employs the same medium as the brain."
