New compounds for iron fortification of foods |
|
Most of us have heard of Popeye, who boosts his strength by eating a can of spinach. Regardless of the exaggerations in the story, spinach, like other green leafy vegetables, beans, and nuts is a great source of non-heme iron. While the heme iron (which is mainly present in meat) is well absorbed, the absorption of the non-heme iron is often reported to be below twenty percent.
One of our PhD candidates Neshat Moslehi invented an innovative salt that could potentially be used for iron fortification of foods. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems in the world. Neshat has designed compounds that could potentially be used for iron fortification of foods. This would be an efficient and cost-effective approach to overcome iron deficiency. |

Tip: UU-style guide also available for students! |
Is it OK to abbreviate Utrecht University to UU in a running sentence? Should you write the word “department” with a capital or lower-case letter? What does an inclusive writing style entail? What is the “correct” spelling? You can find the answers to all these questions in the university style guide. The style guide is also an editing guide and contains guidelines for everyone who produces texts (writing and editing) for Utrecht University. This style guide does not provide the only correct way to write in English and need not be used in every communication setting, but rather explains the principles of style selected to represent Utrecht University’s corporate identity. |

Bio-inspired innovation: towards a circular campus by learning from nature |

At the university, this approach, summarized in the term ‘bio-inspired innovation’, is being put into practice. The university's Corporate Real Estate & Campus office is working together with Appelman and PhD candidate Katharina Hecht, among others, to give the concept a place within the future development of the Utrecht Science Park.

Everything we know is either matter or space |
Philosopher of Cosmology Niels Martens, however, disputes whether this is correct. Organisms contain large amounts of information about the history of life |
Studying the DNA of organisms that live today can increase our understanding of how life evolved billions of years ago. For his PhD research, Julian Vosseberg delved into the DNA of contemporary organisms to find out how complex cells like those of plants, fungi and animals once evolved from simple, bacteria-like cells. His results offer new insights into key steps in the timeline of early complex life, such as the emergence of the cell nucleus.
