Serving as a bridge between science and industry: Maaz Maps |
Methane contributes significantly to climate change. Emission reduction of this greenhouse gas has shown high potential in quickly slowing down global warming. Utrecht University researcher Hossein Maazallahi recently founded his start-up Maaz Maps to accelerate methane emission reduction at the global scale. “My company operates with the latest academic knowledge. Although many questions are still unanswered, we have developed enough methods which are suitable for application in the real world.”

Module fills the gap between the field and lab experiments (in front of Kruyt building) |
The new state-of-the-art Ecotron module of the Netherlands Plant-Ecophenotyping Centre (NPEC) is now fully functional. The module, located in the new NPEC-dedicated building in front of the Kruyt building, allows researchers to simulate and study agricultural and natural ecosystems. It consists of 36 enclosed units in which environmental conditions can be fully controlled and monitored. These units provide researchers with the tools to mimic the complexity of the real world and to study processes that are at work both above- and belowground.

Fewer side effects of medication through DNA testing |
Patients whose drug treatment is matched to their DNA, suffer 30 percent fewer serious side effects. This is the result from a study published by a team of international researchers, including Vera Deneer, associate professor of clinical pharmacology at the Utrecht Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) and her colleague Heshu Abdullah-Koolmees. This is the first publication worldwide, to show that prescribing drugs based on a patient's DNA profile works in practice.

How FAIR is the software landscape of Utrecht University? |
Nowadays, it is quite common to develop and use code and software for research. Graduate Keven Quach wanted to know how FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) the code and software is developed by researchers at Utrecht University. So he dived into GitHub, an online platform where you can develop, manage and publish code and software. There, Keven found some interesting facts that he used in his thesis for his Master Business Informatics.
