Plant protects next generation via soil |
At the Institute of Environmental Biology at UU, microbiologists study how plants and soil microbes reciprocally influence and protect each other. "Soil bacteria are important for plant health," says researcher Roeland Berendsen. Plants recruit soil bacteria to protect against downy mildew, forming a leaf-based defence system. The bacteria not only combat pathogens but also leave a protective legacy in the soil for the next plant generation. |

Track down black holes with this app |
Anyone can use the 'Black Hole Finder' app to join the search in space for, for instance, new black holes. Telescopes set up all over the world continuously receive images of space. Automated programmes sift through this vast stream, presenting a curated selection of images that may showcase intriguing occurrences. When multiple users identify an image as noteworthy, it is shared with collaborating astronomers for further investigation. |
