The Pint of Science festival is an international festival which is organised simultaneously this year in 25+ countries. It's the perfect place to meet researchers working on the science of tomorrow. Come and have a beer with them on May 22nd, 23rd, or 24th in Utrecht! (Among the scientists present will also be UU-Science PhDs and Postdocs.)

Some individuals in an extremely hierarchical society of monkeys help others by providing them with food, without receiving a direct reward themselves. As this is the first time that such ‘prosocial’ behavior is seen in a species that is not considered socially peaceful or tolerant, these results have consequences for the understanding of the evolution of cooperative behaviors. UU-Researchers Debottam Bhattacharjee and Jorg Massen were involved. |

ERC Consolidator Grant for Martijn Kool for unexplored area in mathematics |
With a European Consolidator Grant of nearly two million euros, Martijn Kool, a mathematician at Utrecht University, will investigate a completely unexplored area in algebraic geometry: counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
It is very fundamental research that is valuable for the development of mathematics, but also for other areas, such as string theory.
